Jeep Keng Residence

Nonthaburi, Thailand

Jeep Keng Residence is a home designed for a couple of artists and their son, situated in a challenging urban context. The site faces a congested and visually chaotic foreground, flanked by a two-lane road, a U-turn bridge, a railway line, and an elevated six-lane highway. To complicate matters further, a cement plant borders the property, contributing to both noise and air pollution.

In response to these environmental pressures, the architectural plan strategically places the primary living spaces at the rear of the site, furthest from the sources of disruption. At the heart of the residence lies the couple’s shared studio, acting as a spatial buffer that shields the more private zones of the home. The exterior is defined by a solid wall façade, offering a strong sense of enclosure and privacy. Within, a series of internal courtyards introduces light, ventilation, and moments of calm, while reinforcing a layered sense of spatial hierarchy. This sequencing evokes the logic of a traditional Chinese courtyard house, where privacy, order, and inward focus are central to the experience of dwelling.
